The Ideal Car Maintenance Schedule (Every Mileage Explained)

Manufacturer service intervals are a starting point, not a finishing line. Here is the realistic, mileage-by-mileage maintenance schedule that keeps your car worth its weight at resale and out of the workshop in between.

Every 10,000 km / 6 months

Oil + filter change, tire pressure + tread check, wiper blades, lights. Cost: €120-180.

Every 20,000 km / 12 months

Air filter, cabin filter, brake fluid level check, full visual inspection. Cost: €200-300.

Every 40,000 km

Brake pads (most cars), spark plugs (petrol), AC service. Cost: €350-600.

Every 60,000 km

Brake discs, automatic gearbox oil if applicable, suspension check. Cost: €500-900.

Every 100,000-120,000 km (critical)

Timing belt + water pump (if belt-driven engine), full transmission service. Skipping this = engine destruction. Cost: €700-1,500.

Every 24 months — regulatory

MOT (UK) / TÜV (DE) / §57a (AT). Book early; failure means car off road immediately.

FAQ

What if I drive very little?
Time-based intervals still apply. Oil degrades by age, brake fluid absorbs water, fuel stales. Service annually even if under 5,000 km.
Can I extend intervals to save money?
Manufacturer + 10% is safe. Beyond that you risk warranty and expensive repairs. The 'savings' are usually false.
Dealer or independent garage?
Independent specialists are 30-50% cheaper and equally good in warranty if they stamp the book and use OE-spec parts.
